Hypertension is one of the most frequently encountered chronic conditions, estimated to affect 50 million Americans.
A normal blood pressure of adults aged eighteen years and older is defined as a systolic less than 130 mmHg and a diastolic pressure less than 85 mmHg.
Stage I (mild) hypertension, based on an average of at least two readings at separate visits after initial screening, is defined as a systolic pressure of 140 to 154 mmHg and a diastolic pressure of 90 to 99 mmHg.
In 1972, only 51 percent of hypertensive patients were cognizant of their elevated blood pressure but by 1988, due to educational efforts, this percentage has risen to 65 percent. Yet, only 21percent of individuals have obtained optimal blood pressure control.
Untreated hypertension is a significant risk factor for the development of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality including, but not limited to, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, renal failure, stroke, blindness, left ventricular hypertrophy, and sudden death.

Diuretics (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide) are considered the drugs of choice for elderly or black patients who do not have contraindications for their use. In addition to thiazide diuretics, beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol, metoprolol) have been shown to decrease morbidity and mortality secondary to hypertension. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (e.g., captopril, enalapril, lisinopril) are especially usefully in hypertensive patients with concomitant congestive heart failure or diabetes mellitus. These drugs come with costly side effects that lead to addiction and in some cases untimely death.

Herbal aquaretics increase blood flow to the kidneys with a subsequent increase in urine, but neither sodium nor chloride resorption is decreased. Hence these electroIytes are retained. As a consequence, osmotic pressure will increase as extracellular fluid is drawn into the vessel to equilibrate with the remaining NaCl. This increased intravascular fluid volume will translate into increased vascular resistance with a corresponding increase blood pressure. Hence, not only is the blood pressure not controlled, but with herbal diuretics, the patient's hypertension may in fact be worse than at baseline.
